Using ChatGPT for Learning and Fun

I wrote in an earlier blog post about StarryAI, a website where you can use an artificial intelligence program to generate art. Since then things have already changed, so I will return to that later.

Since my previous blog post, in November a program called ChatGPT came on the scene. ChatGPT is a computer program that can understand, write, and answer questions in English or in any language. It was made by OpenAI, a company that uses computers to learn and answer questions.

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for anyone who wants to improve their skills in English, for students to learn English for their own study areas such as art, design, music, or education, but also for anything they are interested in. In this first blog post of many, we are going to focus on ChatGPT itself. We will go into more detail in later blog posts. Here are six ways ChatGPT can help you with your English and other learning.

1. Writing Practice

ChatGPT can help you practice writing in English. Simply type in what you want to say and ChatGPT will write back to you. This is a great way to practice grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. You can ask for explanations about the error and the grammar in English or in Japanese.

2. Reading practice

You can also use ChatGPT to practice reading English. Ask ChatGPT to write something in English, and then read what it wrote. This will help you improve your understanding of spoken and written English. You can choose any topic you are interested in! The texts used to create ChatGPT are mostly in English, but there are a wide range of topics you can ask about. Music, art, sports, drag racing, anything!

For Geidai students I would suggest you ask ChatGPT to write at the CEFR A2 level (CEFR is a way to rate students' language ability). If the text is still too difficult, you can ask a follow-up question by asking it to write it more simply.

3. Vocabulary

ChatGPT can help you build your English vocabulary by suggesting words you can use in your writing or by creating word lists for you to study. You can input a list of words in English or Japanese (or any language!) and ask ChatGPT to create a list for you, or you can copy/paste in a text and ask it to make a list based on those words. I will teach you later how to easily scan in texts for ChatGPT to analyze (hint: Google Keep can make it easy).

4. Summarizing (概括する)

If you come across an article or text in English that is difficult for you to understand, you can use ChatGPT to summarize it in simpler English or in Japanese. This will help you understand the main ideas and get the most important information. It is also possible to input text in Japanese (or any language) and have it summarize in Japanese. It can be a way to get a handle on what a text is saying in Japanese, too! Or you could ask ChatGPT to write a short text in Japanese about something you are studying in a different class to help you understand what it is about. For example, you could copy and paste the text for this blogpost and ask ChatGPT to summarize it even more or you could ask it followup questions. For example, "What are the main points to this blogpost?" Or you could have ChatGPT translate the entire text into Japanese, as in Number 5.

翻訳する Simply ask ChatGPT to define a word or phrase you may not know in English and it will give you an explanation in simple English. You could also ask "How do you say this (whatever you like) in English. ChatBot originally claimed it can't translate, but it actually does a good job.

6. For Fun

In addition to helping with English language learning, ChatGPT can also be used for fun. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to write a short story or poem in English, or you can have a conversation with it about your interests or hobbies.

Using ChatGPT is easy and free. All you need is a computer or smartphone and an internet connection. Simply go to the OpenAI website at openai.com and start using ChatGPT today!

In conclusion, ChatGPT is a useful tool for college students who want to improve their English skills. Whether you are a student of English as a second language or a student of another subject, ChatGPT can help you practice writing, reading, and vocabulary. Give it a try and see how it can help you improve your English today! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

Please be careful in how you use ChatGPT. If you use it too much without thinking about what it is doing for you, such as by asking it to answer questions in a textbook and just pasting in the answers, you won't be able to actually use the content in class when you need it or you won't be able to pass any tests in which you can't use your smartphones! And I predict that teachers will definitely be finding ways to keep you from taking the easy way.
