A change in purpose for Grammar Guru! Learn-English.Org

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I posted on Grammar Guru. The main reason was there seemed to be only a few students who were interested in studying for the TOEIC using the approach I was looking into. The number of students who were interested and who wanted to pay for a textbook in order to study online was very small.

Therefore, I decided I wanted to write about ways in which students can learn English on the Internet. There are even websites that list other places online where you can study English. From all of these websites I will write about the ones I feel might be of most interest to the students that I am teaching.

I have tried to make my pages on Grammar Guru easy to read, but you can also use translation tools like deepl.com if you'd like to check your understanding.

On this page today, I will write about a site that I think is very useful for practicing all four skills, LearnEnglish.Org. This site provides practice in reading, listening, speaking, writing, and vocabulary in a number of topics at all of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for language) levels. The CEFR levels are used to describe a language user's ability in a foreign language. For example, an A1 CEFR level learner...
  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. (Wikipedia, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
Those at higher CEFR levels can do more.

LearnEnglish.Org lets you take a quiz to see where you might start (Learning English Level Check) and then you can study at all the levels from A1 to the highest C2 or by categories such as "animals," "Basic English," "Technology," or "Celebrities." You can also choose to focus on listening, speaking, reading, or writing.

There are many activities at each CEFR at each level. One example at the A1 level is Four Skills: Running Late. In the first section, you learn how to apologize and forgive someone for being late, then you get some speaking practice. You click on a microphone and read the sentence and the computer gives you feedback on your pronunciation. Then there is a multiple choice quiz on the text you read followed by a short writing task and you get feedback from the computer on how you did.

The nice thing about Learn-English.Org is you get feedback all along the way and you can do the exercises any time and anywhere you like. Please take a look!

If you are a language teacher reading this, please check out Zengengo.com. This website lets you easily create lessons like the ones offered on LearnEnglish.Org not only for English but for French, German, or Spanish.

I will be writing more about other places like this where you can practice your English. I hope you will visit often.
